Unfortunately, Khan sahib passed away before we could meet," he rues. "He heard the recording four times and then said, 'I would like to meet this man the next time I am in Bombay'. Several years ago, when shehnai maestro Ustaad Bismillah Khan heard a recording of his whistling, based on raga Yaman Kalyan, he assumed it was a flute. Surve has perfected the whistle so well that it is not uncommon for people to mistake it for a flute. "For instance, Rahul's whistle in Dil to Pagal Hai and the Subhanallah whistle in Fanaa became emotional signatures, conveying more than the music and lyrics," he adds. Surve's whistling not only immortalised music tracks of films like Karz (Ik haseena thi), Hero (Ding dong), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (Hai hai re hai yeh ladka), Satya (Sapne me milti hai), Fanaa (Subhanallah), but often it also transformed the tunes into leitmotifs. He soon began imitating his friends' codes and slowly this childhood game evolved into a talent. Growing up in Dadar, the musical vortex of Mumbai, a young Surve and his friends would call each other using 'whistle codes'. No instrument, however advanced, can reproduce the subtle nuances of a whistle," says this 62-year-old whistling wizard.
"Whistling is a melody and it comes from within. Having whistled in over 1,500 Hindi film songs, Surve has been charming the Indian audience for over 36 years. While a cop's shrill means trouble, a referee's final whistle lends itself to the joy of the victor.įor Nagesh Surve, however, whistling is an art, one that he has perfected over the years.
